Keep Equipment Operating at Optimal Levels with PTR Preventative Maintenance
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) highly recommends yearly maintenance checks on waste and recycling equipment. Preventative Maintenance is key to the longevity of your baler or compactor, and therefore to the productivity of your waste management system and staff. PTR’s programs are a cost-effective measure for your organization.
Keep equipment functioning at prime efficiency and employees safe and productive with Preventative Maintenance. No matter what fleet size, your organization will benefit greatly from our Preventative Maintenance programs.
After years of regular use, the oil quality in your baler or compactor will degrade. Parts will also begin to wear, thus creating a domino effect. From there, pressure capability and material weights decrease. That reduction in compactor weights result in additional pull fees for your company. Likewise, balers not working at optimal levels result in lower bale weights and an increase in labor costs. Productivity takes a down-turn, fees soar, and sanitation issues will likely arise.
PTR’s Preventative Maintenance Program technician will address the critical systems and structures of your unit. Here’s just a few of the areas they’ll cover during the visit:
- Evaluate overall equipment condition.
- Verify that all safety decals are in good condition.
- Test and verify the operation of safety features.
- Thoroughly inspect the cylinder welds and seals.
- Grease all fittings.
- Inspect all hoses and crimps.
- Inspect all hose clamps and tighten as needed.
- Inspect motor for signs of wear or end of life conditions.
- Inspect pump for leaks or signs of failure.
- Inspect oil level and general condition.
- (Optional) Perform oil analysis by an independent laboratory.
- Operate gauge and verify that there are no leaks and operational.
- To see the complete list of items addressed, click here.
Programs can also be customized to best suit your company’s needs. These are a few of the most popular add-on options:
- Replacing up to 5 gallons of Hydraulic Fluid
- Replacing Safety Stickers
- Replace two main hydraulic hoses and fittings
- Replace start/stop button
- Replace key switch
- Key Guard Installation

If you can use your smartphone, you’re already an expert at using our Smart Baler interface.
The soon to be launched PTR Smart Baler features innovative technology that will revolutionize your company’s waste and recycling systems. It was carefully designed to increase speed, accuracy and efficiency.
We knew that it was critical to make the interface user-friendly. The all-new ‘Smart Control Panel’ is a touchscreen that will feel immediately familiar to users. That’s because it’s set up very similarly to the screen of most smartphones. So, if you can use your smartphone, using this touchscreen will be a breeze.
The ‘Smart Control Panel’ featured on the new PTR Smart Baler
The PTR Smart Baler also features keyless operation. Eliminating keys increases efficiency, because you’ll never find yourself searching for a lost or misplaced key again. Purchasing a new key is costly and results in unwanted downtime. Instead, you’ll input a PIN number to use the baler. Selected employees can be assigned their own, personal PIN number, as well. There is even an option for a fingerprint reader – just like your cell phone.
The weight readings provided are the most precise possible, and the data attained is the most accurate to date. You can use this highly accurate information to make better decisions- decisions that will ultimately save your organization valuable time and money.
We’ve barely scratched the surface of what The Smart Baler has to offer. The new features will increase safety, productivity and overall efficiency, while helping your company reach and exceed it’s sustainability goals. Ready to learn more? Contact PTR today.

A Family Legacy
Way back in 1907, Charles B. Leonard founded Philadelphia Tramrail Company, a manufacturer of monorails and meat track systems. Soon after, Robert Riethmiller was hired as a mechanic’s helper. Over the next two decades, Robert learned the ins and outs of running the business and in 1929, he purchased it. A few years later, his son, Robert J. Riethmiller Sr. joined the company, and years later his son, Robert J. Riethmiller Jr., came aboard, as well.
Fast forward to 1994, and the next generation furthered the family legacy, when Eric Riethmiller joined the ranks. Eric, along side now-CEO Mike Savage, helped rapidly grow and expand PTR Baler and Compactor Company to the international industry leader that it is today.
Since 1907, many things have changed. One thing, however, hasn’t- our dedication to creating the highest quality, safest waste equipment on the market. Just like we care about the safety of our own family, staff and technicians, we care about the safety of you and your employees.
We’ve been doing it longer than just about anyone, so we know how to do it right. A major aspect of the PTR difference is that we work with you before, during and after the sale to ensure our products are being used safely and optimally. We want to ensure you fully realize the benefits of utilizing our balers, compactors and other waste products. Our equipment is key to helping your company reach it’s sustainability goals, increase workplace productivity, efficiency and of course, safety.
PTR is now celebrating 50 years of baler manufacturing and over 100 years of American steel manufacturing. We’re proud to have a family legacy that has stood the test of time. Here’s to another 100 years!

What is Zero Waste?
Today, lots of companies are interested in increasing sustainability and implementing sustainability programs. Some companies are striving for even more, aiming for ‘Zero Waste‘.
PTR’s top of the line balers and compactors can help you achieve your Zero Waste goal by turning what was once considered trash into valuable recycling commodities. Cardboard, paper, plastics, shrink wrap, and aluminum can all be diverted from the landfill, increasing sustainability and creating a new revenue stream. Many baler and compactor models are available. Our customer service representatives are happy to answer all of your questions, so you can be sure you’ll get the one that’s right for you company.
The more organizations embrace Zero Waste and other sustainability policies, the closer we will come to creating a healthier, greener earth for future generations. Now is the time to make these changes and put these sustainability endeavors into action. Your company’s primary goal should be to avoid sending waste to the landfill as completely as possible. From there, you’ll seek to proactively reduce, reuse and recycle any and all waste. When none of these are feasible, donation is another option.
Sustainability can be a challenge for large corporations and small businesses alike, but Zero Waste is a major commitment. It all starts with dedication. Getting management and employees on board is a critical step. You’ll need to create a concise plan of how you are actually going to make it happen, and then see it through each day. It’s not always easy, but the difference you’ll be making will be well worth it.
PTR Baler and Compactor Company is proud to offer waste equipment with full UL approval. UL is a global company who aims to connect people to safer, more sustainable products. From their website www.ul.com:
“UL helps companies demonstrate safety, confirm compliance, enhance sustainability, manage transparency, deliver quality and performance, strengthen security, protect brand reputation, build workplace excellence, and advance societal wellbeing.”
UL recommends that you consider these 3 ‘Steps to Waste Diversion’ before implementing your policy. The first step is ‘Understanding’ current waste streams and what their estimated volumes are. Next, ‘Measuring’. Set your goals and figure out your action plan on how you will eliminate waste going to the landfill. Lastly, ‘Rerouting’. One diversion practice allows you to 1) re-route waste to other facilities that will use it as a raw material 2) send to recycling plant 3) use towards production of energy.
There isn’t one definition of Zero Waste. UL has 3 different classifications:
- 100% landfill diversion *still allows some waste to go to waste-to-energy facilities
- ‘Virtually Zero Waste’ *98% diverted from landfill
- ‘Landfill Diversion’ * at least 80% is diverted from landfill
It’s important to remember, Zero Waste is a journey, not a destination. Any strides towards Zero Waste should be celebrated. For more information on how PTR’s product can help you achieve Zero Waste at your organization, visit PTRco.com
