What is Zero Waste?
Today, lots of companies are interested in increasing sustainability and implementing sustainability programs. Some companies are striving for even more, aiming for ‘Zero Waste‘.
PTR’s top of the line balers and compactors can help you achieve your Zero Waste goal by turning what was once considered trash into valuable recycling commodities. Cardboard, paper, plastics, shrink wrap, and aluminum can all be diverted from the landfill, increasing sustainability and creating a new revenue stream. Many baler and compactor models are available. Our customer service representatives are happy to answer all of your questions, so you can be sure you’ll get the one that’s right for you company.
The more organizations embrace Zero Waste and other sustainability policies, the closer we will come to creating a healthier, greener earth for future generations. Now is the time to make these changes and put these sustainability endeavors into action. Your company’s primary goal should be to avoid sending waste to the landfill as completely as possible. From there, you’ll seek to proactively reduce, reuse and recycle any and all waste. When none of these are feasible, donation is another option.
Sustainability can be a challenge for large corporations and small businesses alike, but Zero Waste is a major commitment. It all starts with dedication. Getting management and employees on board is a critical step. You’ll need to create a concise plan of how you are actually going to make it happen, and then see it through each day. It’s not always easy, but the difference you’ll be making will be well worth it.
PTR Baler and Compactor Company is proud to offer waste equipment with full UL approval. UL is a global company who aims to connect people to safer, more sustainable products. From their website www.ul.com:
“UL helps companies demonstrate safety, confirm compliance, enhance sustainability, manage transparency, deliver quality and performance, strengthen security, protect brand reputation, build workplace excellence, and advance societal wellbeing.”
UL recommends that you consider these 3 ‘Steps to Waste Diversion’ before implementing your policy. The first step is ‘Understanding’ current waste streams and what their estimated volumes are. Next, ‘Measuring’. Set your goals and figure out your action plan on how you will eliminate waste going to the landfill. Lastly, ‘Rerouting’. One diversion practice allows you to 1) re-route waste to other facilities that will use it as a raw material 2) send to recycling plant 3) use towards production of energy.
There isn’t one definition of Zero Waste. UL has 3 different classifications:
- 100% landfill diversion *still allows some waste to go to waste-to-energy facilities
- ‘Virtually Zero Waste’ *98% diverted from landfill
- ‘Landfill Diversion’ * at least 80% is diverted from landfill
It’s important to remember, Zero Waste is a journey, not a destination. Any strides towards Zero Waste should be celebrated. For more information on how PTR’s product can help you achieve Zero Waste at your organization, visit PTRco.com

Here’s What NOT to Put in Your PTR Compactor.
There’s so many benefits of a having a PTR compactor in your facility, like the space savings, cost savings, improved safety and productivity, and overall healthier work environment. You’ll want your waste compactor to continue working at the optimal level for years to come. To help ensure this, educate your employees of what is safe to put in the compactor and what is not.
Most waste is safe to throw into your compactor, however, DO NOT dispose of the following items:
Flammable Substances are not safe to place in your PTR compactor. Anything explosive or flammable should be kept far away from your compactor. A fire inside the equipment would be extremely dangerous for nearby employees. This includes aerosol spray cans, as they are under pressure and it’s possible they may explode in the compactor.
Batteries should be disposed of according to recycling standards, and not thrown into your compactor. Batteries have a highly toxic substance in them which would contaminate the other contents of the compactor, making them no longer acceptable for recycling.
Liquids are a no-go in your Stationary Compactor . PTR Self-Contained compactors are equipped to deal with wet-waste, but not Stationary compactors. Disposing of liquids in your stationary compactor can lead to unwanted odors. Organizations like supermarkets, malls, movie theatres, restaurants, hospitals, food processors and retail supercenters who process wet waste will require a Self-Contained compactor. PTR’s innovative Sure-Tite Liquid Retention System is key to preventing leakage. Be sure to discuss with type of compactor is best for your organization with your PTR Customer Service Representative.
It’s wise to train your staff that if they aren’t sure, to air on the side of caution always. Lastly, make sure employees know to never place their hands, arms or other limbs in the compactor, as this is extremely dangerous. If something accidentally falls into the compactor, no one should ever reach in to retrieve it. An appropriate tool should be designated for this.

A Quieter, Safer Baler: PTR’s New Quiet Pump
Introducing our 50th anniversary option, the Quiet Pump Power Unit.
PTR Baler & Compactor Company continues to innovate and lead the industry with the new Quiet Pump Power Unit. The Quiet Pump can be retrofitted to existing units as a kit and can also be used on compactors. This innovation means major strides in safety, productivity and cost-savings. We’re exited to share some of the exponential benefits of this technology.
The Quiet Pump vastly reduces noise level in the warehouse, which improves workplace safety in a number of different ways. The noise reduction is much less damaging to employee’s hearing. Our Quiet Pump operates at around 60 dB. To give you an idea of what 60 dB sounds like, here’s a few things to compare it to:
-average conversation 60 dB
-vacuum cleaner 70 dB
-garbage disposal 80 dB
-food blender 88 dB
-thunder 120 dB
-bulldozer 85 dBAnother huge benefit is that the Quiet Pump helps employees to be more alert of what’s happening in the warehouse. It allows them to hear other, more dangerous sounds. For example, say a fork lift is in use. Other loud equipment operating simultaneously may impair their ability to be alert to the forklift.
As many companies begin to lessen their footprint and downsize their facilities, customer areas may be just outside the warehouse. Therefore, they’ll be exposed to back room noise. To keep things quieter out front, you’ll want to keep noise levels down in the back. The Quiet Pump will play a critical role in this.
Our April newsletter focuses on the many features and benefits of the Quiet Pump Power Unit. Not signed to receive our e-newsletters yet? Click here to access the ‘Join My List’ Facebook tab and add your email.
