Baler Benefits: Fiscal, Functional & Environmental
A recycling baler will provide a plethora of benefits in three key areas of every business or organization: fiscal, functional and environmental.
FISCAL BENEFITS
Recycling balers provide a significant financial benefit to your organization. Recycling balers turn what was once waste into valuable recycling commodities. Something that was once thrown away has become an additional revenue stream. The return will prove to be well worth the investment. You’ll find it won’t take too long for the reduction in shipping costs, decrease in trips to the landfill, and recycling rebate earnings to cover the cost of the baler.
Even if your organization is working with a small budget, PTR can help you find the right baler for you. Our Rebuilt pre-owned certified balers are a great option for those who want to start a recycling program with limited funds.
FUNCTIONAL/PRODUCTIVITY BENEFITS
Safe, proper use of a high-quality, well-maintained PTR Recycling Baler can increase the overall productivity of your backroom operations significantly. A reliable piece of equipment that was built to last, like a PTR unit, will reduce downtime in several ways. First, you’ll streamline your waste and recycling operations. Your backroom environment will be cleaner, healthier and have more clear space, which reduces the chance of employee injury. And, with less hauling trips, you’ll save not only money, but valuable time, as well.
All employees who operate the baler must be fully trained to use it safely. PTR can help you train your staff properly.
ENVIRONMENTAL/SUSTAINABILITY BENEFITS
Today, it’s critical for corporations and smaller businesses alike to be keenly focused on their environmental impact. Finding ways to act more responsibly towards the environment is now its own position in many companies. Recycling balers are a no-brainer when it comes to implementing sustainability policies.
No matter the size of your organization, you create waste. How you handle this waste is what will make all the difference. A recycling baler helps you do this! First, you’ll create a commodity from what was waste. PTR balers, depending on the model, can recycle material like cardboard, plastic, paper, aluminum and more. Some larger units can even compress tires and appliances. With less garbage pickup and trips to the landfill, you’ll lower your carbon footprint.
Contact PTR today to learn more! Our experienced representatives will work with you to find the baler that will best suit your needs and budget.

What NOT to put in your PTR Compactor
Our last blog post explained the similarities and differences between Stationary and Self-Contained Compactors. Now, we’re going to delve into another important issue: what not to put in your trash compactor.
PTR compactors are an extremely effective method of compressing and reducing waste, which saves your organization costly trips to the landfill, and in turn decreases your carbon footprint. There are a few rules to keeping your compactor running optimally and greatly limiting the chances of operator injury. Downtime and injuries are productivity killers and eat away at your company’s bottomline. Prevent them by following these key guidelines and thoroughly training all staff to do the same.
DONT #1: LIMBS
Employees should be instructed to never, under any circumstances, put their hands, arms or legs into the trash compactor. There have been critical injuries occur each year due to improper use of waste compactors. It’s imperative operators understand to never place limbs inside the compactor. Instead, there should be an appropriate tool that can be used to reach inside the compactor in the event that something needs to be retrieved out of it.DON’T #2: BATTERIES & TOXIC MATERIALS
Putting batteries into the compactor contaminates the rest of the waste inside, due to the fact that batteries contain highly toxic contents. They must be disposed of separately. Any other toxic substances, liquids or biohazard material needs to be disposed of according to their own safety guidelines.DON’T #3: AEROSOL SPRAYS
Aerosol sprays are also very dangerous to place inside a trash compactor. When compressed, the spray can may combust. It’s not only a major safety risk, but it could lead to severe damage to the equipment as well. Even small aerosol spray cans should not go in the compactor.DON’T #4: FLAMMABLE MATERIALS
Keep all flammable materials far away from your trash compactor. Even a small chance something may explode inside the compactor is not worth the risk. Always err on the side of caution and dispose of flammable materials separately, in the proper manner.DON’T #5: LIQUID
Liquid waste is ok for Self- Contained compactors, however, they’re ideally made for wet waste, or waste that creates liquid when compressed. The separate container will collect this liquid. If the substance is completely in liquid form from the start, ideally it should be disposed of directly into a liquid trash receptacle. If you have any questions about the proper use of your PTR compactor, reach out to your Account Manager directly, or contact customer service.

PTR Compactors: Self-Contained or Stationary?
Many businesses benefit greatly from utilizing a PTR compactor to manage their waste. The two most commonly used types of compactors are Self-Contained and Stationary. They both accomplish basically the same main goal- compress, and in turn minimize, your organizations waste output. This means reduced collection costs and less frequent hauls to the landfill. These benefits are not only cost-saving to your company, but help you reach sustainability goals, as well- fewer trips to the landfill mean less carbon emissions.
MORE COMPACTOR BENEFITS INCLUDE
- Odor control
- Decreases fire hazards
- Less insects and rodent issues
- Saves critical floor space
- Makes work environment cleaner and therefore safer and more sanitary
- Improves appearance of your facility
- Greatly increases efficiency
- Reduces likelihood of scavengers or unauthorized persons accessing your trash
Now that we’ve discussed the similarities between Self-Contained and Stationary compactors, let’s talk about the differences.
SELF-CONTAINED COMPACTORS
Generally, this type of compactor is used for granulated or wet waste. If the waste material your typically dealing with creates liquid when it’s compacted, a Self-Contained machine is the way to go. The compactor has a container attached to it that collects all the liquid, so it can be properly disposed of. PTR compactors have leak guard so you can rest-assured you won’t have any unwanted messes to clean up.These compactors may be ideal for restaurants, hospitals, malls, movie theaters, supermarkets and food processors.
STATIONARY COMPACTORS
If your organization deals with mostly dry waste, a Stationary compactor would be the best choice for you. This would be ideal for material that’s not recyclable (that’s where a PTR Vertical Baler would come into play). If the material is truly non-recyclable, this is the best way to properly dispose of it and minimize it’s impact on the environment.Stationary compactors, like the name suggests, are not easily moved and are anchored to the ground where they are places. So, be sure to consider all your options prior to installation. Our experts can help make sure you choose the ideal location.
Government institutions, universities, apartment buildings, waste haulers, clothing and merchandise chains and more are among the organizations who would find a Stationary machine ideal. We can even customize your compactors paint to match your branding! Check out our blog on customization here.

Recycle Right, Right Now
Being eco-conscious is increasingly important for businesses and consumers alike. There are many small things we can do that make a big difference. Recycling is arguably the easiest and hopefully, you’re already doing it at home. But, what are your company’s sustainability practices?
Effective waste management can make or break corporate sustainability goals. Organizations must be focused on their landfill contributions and carbon footprint. Less waste equates to fewer trucks hauling waste to landfills, and in turn less pollution-causing emissions. It also results in major savings for your company, since your transport fees will decrease.
Implementing sustainability policies is essential, and utilizing a recycling baler plays a significant role. Recycling Balers divert an array of materials including cardboard, newspaper, paper cartons, aluminum cans, electronic waste, plastics, textiles and more. You’ll see an overall waste reduction and lower your carbon footprint, all the while creating a healthier internal environment. Not to mention, it creates an additional revenue stream by turning what was once trash into valuable recyclable commodities.
In the United States, the vast majority of products are shipped in corrugated packaging. Recycling materials such as cardboard is key in resource conservation. Incredibly, recycling just one ton of cardboard saves about 46 gallons of oil. It’s estimated that the amount of cardboard disposed of each year is equal to the amount of energy needed to heat 5o million homes for 20 years- a truly mind-blowing fact!
And, when you’re running your air conditioning during these hot summer days, consider this: recycling 6 aluminum cans equates to 1 hour of running an air conditioner.
Remember, recycling correctly is critical. Recycle thoughtfully, whether you’re at work or at home.
At PTR, it’s always been our mission to help organizations go greener and meet their sustainability goals. When you invest in a PTR baler or compactor, you invest in a healthier world. Ready to start reaching new sustainability goals at your company? Contact PTR today.
